The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers started in the Engine pit with 19 machinists. They stood in solidarity to fight for justice on the job. Today the IAMAW looks very different since May 5, 1888. The IAM is one of the fastest growing unions in the labor movement, seeing success in new fields such as healthcare, professional services, and retail. The IAM was the first to organize retail workers at an Apple store in Maryland and has seen over 1,000 healthcare professionals become new IAM members at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center. Austin Pets Allied Workers (APAW) at Austin Pets Alive! (APA) animal shelters have won a vote to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 776, making it the country’s biggest union of animal shelter workers. The victory comes after months of organizing and strong peer-to-peer outreach efforts by APAW members.

With nearly 600,000 active and retired members, the IAM is one of the largest and most diverse labor unions in North America. From Boeing and Lockheed Martin to United Airlines and Harley-Davidson, you will find IAM members across all walks of life. IAM members demand respect and dignity in the workplace. Together, we have been able to bargain for increased job security, higher wages and improved benefits. Workers across the U.S. are looking toward unionization in growing numbers. Need help organizing your coworkers to fight for wages, benefits, and working conditions. Why the Machinists Union? There is strength in unity – and the Machinists Union provides workers with a powerful, collective voice to communicate to management.
